When Basquiat says “I have a crown I’m a King”, we embark on the path of insignified status, which also raises the question: “Am I a King ’cause I have a crown?”
Or as Carsten Lehmann wrote about this cycle:
“The cycle “Panoptikum” with King, Scholar and Skull is a remarkable triumvirate of souls. The protagonists seem like figures torn from life, who unwittingly have to play a role in the Comedia dell’Arte that overtaxes them. A symbol of our daily madness? More reality than appearance or just carnival? In any case, the king does not make a happy impression.”
